Is being “in sync” or “on the same wavelength” an actual mechanism or just a metaphor for mutual understanding?

Reviewing neuroscience literature, we conclude that currently there is no strong theoretical argument or empirical evidence that tight neural synchronization between two or more brains is a mechanism for mutual understanding.
